The scholarships are named for four longtime contributors to journalism in Kern County:

The late Bill Rintoul, former oil columnist for The Bakersfield Californian. Read article. [PDF]

Joe Stevenson, former reporter, editor and columnist for The Bakersfield Californian.

Burleigh Smith, former television reporter in Bakersfield.

The Kern Press Club awarded four $1,000 scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year. The scholarships are named for four longtime contributors to journalism in Kern County.

These students are studying journalism, public relations, photography or other media professions.

Congratulations go to:

Lizbeth Juarez, a student at Cal State Bakersfield who graduated from Bakersfield College and Bakersfield High School. She is the recipient of the Burleigh Smith Scholarship, named for the former television reporter in Bakersfield.

Ian Hamilton, a student at Cal State Fullerton who studied at Bakersfield College and graduated from Tehachapi High School. He is the recipient of the Bill Rintoul Scholarship, in honor of the former oil columnist for The Bakersfield Californian.

Cali Ryan, a student at the Brooks Institute of Photography who studied at Bakersfield College and graduated from Kern Valley High School. Cali is the recipient of the Joe D. Stevenson Scholarship, named for the former reporter, editor and columnist for The Bakersfield Californian.

Julianna Crisalli, a student at Cal State Fullerton who studied at Bakersfield College and graduated from Tehachapi High School. She is the recipient of the Mary K. Shell Scholarship, named for the former reporter and editor for The Bakersfield Californian and Kern County politico.
